The spokesman said police found a teddy bear and flowers that the man said were meant for the singer inside his car.

The man reportedly refused to leave his car when ordered and asked police for directions to Detroit before taking off again. He was arrested a few minutes later and charged with reckless driving, speeding, interfering with an officer, failure to obey an officer's signal and failure to obey a stop sign.

The man was released on $5,000 bail and taken to a local hospital for observation, Dumas said.

The man told police he was going to meet Beyonce at the George Washington Bridge in New York, Dumas said.

"He didn't threaten her or anything," Dumas said. "It was just his claim that he was going to meet her."]]>

Twenty years - this week! - after the debut of MTV's "Headbangers Ball," heavy metal is experiencing a renaissance, and Dee Snider, one of the '80s genre's most visible figures as lead singer of Twisted Sister, is happily gonna take it.

Referring to "A Twisted Christmas," his band's surprise hit holiday album and live show, Snider recalls, "People said, 'You're really going to kill your career,' and I said, 'What career?'

"You were more likely to hear us on a womens menopausal commercial than on the radio."
The album came out two years ago. The accompanying show has grown so popular, the band finds itself working on a gig at Nokia Theatre in Times Square on Dec. 5, after which, in 2009, it's headed to Broadway.

Where they just may find some competition.

"Rock of Ages" opened a week ago at New World Stages and - with apologies to legitimate theater critics (see review, Page 63) - it's already generating B'way buzz.

It's the story of an LA bar worker with rock-star dreams who meets a Midwestern girl aspiring to be an actress. Ultimately, the barback finds himself in a cheesy pop band, while the thespian pursues the can't-miss path of stripping her way to an acting career.

Set entirely, of course, to an all-star score of '80s rock hits by bands such as Styx, Whitesnake, Poison and - naturally - Twisted Sister.

Playwright Chris D'Arienzo says that the story line was inspired by Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'."

And there are a lot of believers out there, if the audiences are anything to go by. Outside the theater, fans dressed in heavy metal spandex and teased hair have already attached a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" aspect to the musical, which stars "American Idol" heartthrob Constantine Maroulis.

Jamie Buckner, 28, says he's not usually a big musical theater fan but, as an admitted "big Poison guy," he turned out for numbers like "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." As for whether he's laughing at or with the show, he says "they're taking it as seriously as you can take '80s hair metal."

Which, according to "Rock of Ages" director Kristin Hanggi, is pretty seriously.

"There was something about the nature of the hair at the time, the costumes of the time, the lyrics, the stories - they were so big, it was like they wanted to be put on the stage," observes Hanggi.

"It's a celebration, but with our tongue planted in our cheek."

Writer D'Arienzo says parody was his original intention, but as the story came along, he found that the epic nature of heavy metal tells its own story. "Everything's too big for the moment," he observed. "And that's what's awesome about it."

While some think that bigness - of hair, of egos - is what doomed the genre, Snider has another theory.

"It was Bon Jovi," he says.

"We were in the mid-'80s and record companies are starting to get ahold of this damn thing: 'Quick, go to LA and sign every band on the LA strip.' That was the first move. 'OK . So how do you do this? Credibility track followed by power ballad.' Great OK. 'You know what? We really don't need that credibility track. Let's just go for the power ballad. That's the real moneymaker. Hey, you know what'd be even better? If they got rid of their instruments and played acoustic guitars. Yeah, that's metal.' "

Bon Jovi brought all those elements together and "he's to blame," Snider says half-kiddingly. "There was no smiling before Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi introduced something called 'happy metal.' What the f- - -?"

Not that he's bitter or anything.

How could he be, when one of his Christmas songs, "God Bless Us Every One," found its way to Celine Dion, who in turn recorded it last year, renamed it "The Magic of Christmas (God Bless Us Every One)" and essentially bought Snider the house he lives in today.

As "Rock of Ages" director Hanggi says about heavy metal, her play and - let's face it - life in general: "We all grow up being these idealist dreamers with ideas of who we want to be in the world, and find the world doesn't always match up to those expectations. Your dreams kind of change shape along the way, but they come back in a different way."

More to the point, says Snider, recalling his Christmas success, "It's getting weirder and weirder."

Brazilian Band, Vougan Launch Online CD Sales via http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_5/ http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_5/ Sun, 26 Oct 2008 19:43:31 -0500 dzapped http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_5/
"Mind Exceeding" was initially released in the latter half of 2007 to a strong response in their home country of Brazil. Setting themselves apart by utilizing the freedom of writing spontaneously, without worry of trends, Vougan continue to gain interest across the globe. The band have recently signed a contract with the Japanese label, Soundholic, to distribute the CD throughout Japan.

Metal Music Promotions, LLC (MMP), an independent artist development, music marketing, and band promotion company, have long been advocates of the talents of Vougan. Billed as part of the new model music industry, the company strives to assist unsigned and/or indie artists in career development. Taking the young Brazilian band under their wing, MMP have assumed the role of media contact, and U.S.A. representation for Vougan. CD sales were the next step, logically.

http://mindexceeding.metalmusicpromotions.com has been set up specifically for the purpose of selling the Vougan - "Mind Exceeding" CD. The web page reads much like a distributor's one sheet, and is designed to give the potential buyer just enough information to want to purchase the album. A "Mind Exceeding" Sales Widget has also been launched in order to promote sales of the CD via social media outlets.

While the web page does make Vougan's debut CD available to many who may have never gotten the chance to purchase it, this is ny no means full scale distribution. MMP is currently researching other options, and looks to distribute "Mind Exceeding" throughout The United States, Canada, and Europe in the near future.

Teen gets time for grandma in 'gangster rap' video http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_8/ http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_8/ Wed, 29 Oct 2008 15:35:36 -0500 taz http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_8/ ETWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A Florida teenager has been sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention for coaxing his senile grandmother into holding a gun and threatening to shoot "all the pigs" in a homemade "gangster rap" video.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Alfinez pleaded guilty Tuesday to elder abuse charges. His family has said the case was a misunderstanding.

The 85-year-old grandmother can be seen in the video holding a handgun, wearing a black mask and threatening to shoot "all the pigs."

Man Assaults Dio Fan Over Atrocious ‘Holy Diver’ K http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_10/ http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_10/ Fri, 14 Nov 2008 15:00:01 -0600 taz http://www.metalradio.com/article/article_10/
A 24-year-old man from Wisconsin has been charged with assaulting two men over one of them performing a dreadful karaoke version of Dio’s ‘Holy Diver’.

It is alleged that Wisconsin resident Kyle D. Drinkwine put 28-year-old James Mischler and his 29-year-old friend Cyrus Kozub in chokeholds following their abomination of Dio’s ‘Holy Diver’. Drinkwine’s blood alcohol content was registered at .169, roughly twice the state limit.

Drinkwine was booked into the Pierce County Jail on battery and disorderly conduct counts. Though Drinkwine declined to speak with cops following his arrest, an officer overheard him, during a jail phone call, tell a friend he "fucked up" and was arrested for fighting. This is the second time in 15 months that a karaoke singer has been attacked over their song styling. Last August, a Washington man was punched by a female bar patron who thought his cover of "Yellow," a Coldplay song, "really sucked."
